Intakes in Germany 2027-28: Winter & Summer Deadlines, Fees in INR, and Eligibility for Indian Students

Winter 2026 has already closed. This guide covers the next two open windows: Winter 2027 (deadline 15 July 2027) and Summer 2028 (deadline 15 January 2028). If you want to move sooner, Summer 2027 is still open, with applications opening around November 2026.

There are exactly two intakes in Germany: the Winter semester (October to March, covering nearly every discipline) and the Summer semester (April to September, narrower for engineering and CS). There is no January intake and no rolling admission at public universities. Per the DAAD Wissenschaft weltoffen 2025 report, around 59,000 Indian students enrolled in German universities in Winter 2024/25, making India the largest source country, ahead of China for the first time.

Counselor insight: Summer is not a simpler backup, only a narrower one. Confirm intake availability at the program level, not the university level, before investing time in an application.

For most Indian students, Winter is the default. BTech and BSc degrees finish in May or June, which lines up with the July deadline once APS and language testing are already underway.

The standard deadline is 15 July 2027, per Uni-Assist. Submit by end of May 2027 to stay inside their recommended 8-week processing window. Competitive TU9 programs, especially at TU Munich, close between March and April 2027, so always check the program page directly.

Two routes exist: Uni-Assist, at €75 (Rs.8,175) for the first application and €30 (Rs.3,270) for each additional one, per its fee schedule; or direct application through the university portal, used by RWTH Aachen and LMU Munich, among others.

Among the intakes in Germany, Summer suits specific situations, but it is not an equal alternative to Winter. Fewer programs open, scholarships are thinner, and the visa runway is tighter since the semester starts in April, close on the heels of admission decisions.

The nearest opportunity is Summer 2027, with applications opening around November 2026 and closing 15 January 2027. With more runway, Summer 2028 applications open around November 2027 and close 15 January 2028. Universities of applied sciences typically begin 1 March; traditional universities begin 1 April. The same two routes apply as in Winter.

New from 2027 onward: Indian Master's applicants in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management must also submit a Digital Master Test (dMAT) alongside APS documents. APS India announced this on 29 June 2026: the dMAT is run separately by g.a.s.t., costs €150 (Rs.16,350), and does not replace APS verification. For the confirmed Summer 2027 cycle, registration closed 15 September 2026 with the test on 26 September 2026. APS India has not yet published the Summer 2028 window; confirm the date on the dMAT portal rather than assuming it repeats exactly.

Counselor insight: Most students who plan a Summer intake around TU Munich or RWTH Aachen discovers their exact program is Winter-only, usually after months of prep. Confirm program-level Summer availability first.

These rules apply to both intakes.

Bachelor's: Since the rule change effective Winter 2026/27, Indian applicants need a minimum 70% aggregate in Class 12, any board, to clear APS verification. Below 70%, a Studienkolleg (foundation year) route may still apply. English proficiency: IELTS 6.0+ or TOEFL 80+ for English medium; TestDaF 4 or DSH 2 for German medium. APS certificate is mandatory.

Master's: Relevant bachelor's degree, typically with a 60-65% aggregate or equivalent CGPA (program-set, not an APS floor). IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL iBT 80+ or TestDaF 4/DSH 2 for German medium. APS is mandatory; dMAT is mandatory only for Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, and Business/Management applicants from Summer 2027 onward. SOP (500-800 words), 2-3 LORs, and a CV in Lebenslauf format.

MBA and PhD: MBA intakes in Germany largely follow Winter at public universities, though several private schools run rolling admissions. PhD intakes are governed by supervisor availability, not the fixed calendar; both April and October starts are common once a professor confirms a place.

Gap year: Up to 2 years are accepted for undergraduate applicants and up to 5 for postgraduate, provided the SOP explains it.

The APS certificate sits before the application process, not inside it, for both intakes in Germany. Every later step, from Uni-Assist to the VFS visa appointment, needs it first. APS (Akademische Prüfstelle), a joint German Embassy-DAAD body, has verified Indian academic documents since 1 November 2022.

Match your situation to one of these among the intakes in Germany.

1. Final-year BTech/BSc graduating May-June 2027: Winter 2027 is your intake. Start APS now, book IELTS or TOEFL, shortlist 5-7 programs, and submit by the end of May 2027 using your provisional certificate.
2. Already graduated, preparing now: Your APS should clear without interview risk. If your field is Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Economics, or Business/Management and you want to move sooner, Summer 2027 is genuinely open; register for dMAT before its September 2026 deadline.
3. Missed Winter 2027: Choose Summer 2028 at a university confirmed open to your program or Winter 2028, using the extra months to strengthen APS and IELTS and add a relevant project.
4. PhD or research-heavy Master's: The calendar follows your supervisor, not the intake. A confirmed April start makes Summer valid; without it, secure supervisor contact first.

Counselor insight: The visa takes about 12 weeks from India regardless of intake. Book your VFS slot the day your offer arrives, not when every document is ready.

1. APS delayed past your deadline: Contact universities directly with proof of your APS submission date. Direct-application universities are more flexible than Uni-Assist. For Summer, an October delay effectively removes the January deadline; pivot to the next Winter cycle.
2. Language score not ready: Several universities accept a pending-score declaration if you state the exam date. Verify each university's FAQ, and check whether an MOI certificate is accepted at your shortlisted universities.
3. Missed the dMAT registration window: New from 2027 onward. If missed, the Summer intake closes to you for that field and cycle; shift to the next Winter intake, where dMAT does not apply.
4. Missed the application deadline: Both deadlines are firm for public universities. A handful of private universities and PhD positions accept late applications. Use the extra months to strengthen APS, IELTS, and your project profile.
5. Visa delayed or refused: Book VFS the moment your offer arrives. The refusal letter states the exact reason, most often an insufficient blocked-account balance (must show exactly €11,904 per the German Federal Foreign Office), a name mismatch between APS and passport, or a missing document.

• First, if you are finishing a BTech or BSc in May or June 2027 and targeting Winter intake in Germany 2027, start APS now. Processing takes up to 8 weeks, and the visa takes another 12.
• Second, do not build a Summer plan around public-university engineering or CS programs without verifying program-level availability, and register for dMAT well before the deadline if your Master's field requires it.
• Third, a missed Winter deadline is not a lost year. Using the time to strengthen APS, your language score, and your profile puts you in a stronger position for the next cycle.
