• A sponsorship letter from a parent or legal guardian (other relatives aren't accepted for Indian residents), along with their income tax returns
• An official scholarship letter, such as one from the Government of Italy Scholarships program, confirming both amount and duration
• A sanctioned and fully disbursed education loan, with funds visible in your bank statement, not just a sanction letter

My insight: Treat €10,179.85 as the floor, not the target. Consulates check whether your budget realistically covers your chosen city, and a balance that just clears the minimum for Milan raises more questions than it answers.

If you're headed to Milan or Rome, check the cost of living in Italy separately, since actual expenses there often run above this legal minimum.

The Italy student visa itself isn't expensive, but the total cost adds up once you count what happens after you land.

• VFS service fee: Charged separately for your appointment and biometrics, confirmed only at booking.
• Processing time: Up to 90 days once your file reaches the consulate, resetting if they raise an "advance notice for refusal" over missing documents.
• 2026-27 deadline: 30 November 2026, confirmed on the Universitaly portal (cited above). Missing it isn't automatically fatal, but it puts your enrollment at risk.

Italy runs most of its academic year around one main intake: September to October, when the majority of bachelor's and master's programs begin and when Universitaly pre-enrollment activity is at its peak. A handful of universities offer a smaller spring intake for select courses, but if you're applying from India, you're almost certainly working toward the September cycle, so that's what this calendar is built around.

Indian students are already juggling board exams, entrance tests, and admission offers on their own clock, so here's roughly how that lines up with the Italy student visa timeline for a September 2026 intake.

If you're on the MBBS route, IMAT registration and the exam fall inside that August window, ahead of your regular visa timeline. Check the IMAT exam dates for 2026 so it doesn't clash with anything else planned that month.

If you're a final-year BTech student graduating in May 2026 and targeting a September 2026 master's intake, your window is tight but workable. Start Universitaly pre-enrollment the moment you have a provisional degree certificate, since waiting for the final marksheet can push you past the HRD attestation queue.

If your family's bank balance sits close to the ₹11,33,323 minimum and you're relying on an education loan to bridge the gap, get it fully disbursed and reflected in your bank statement before your visa appointment. A sanction letter alone, without disbursed funds, is a common reason Indian applicants get an advance notice for refusal.

If you don't have an IELTS or TOEFL score and your course is in English, check whether your university accepts a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate from your Indian institution instead. Many do, and it's often the deciding factor in whether a study visa for Italy is realistic on your timeline.

Getting your Italy student visa stamped isn't the final step. Here's what happens once you land.

Residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno):

• Apply within eight days of arrival, through a designated post office.
• Your file goes to the local Questura, the police headquarters handling immigration, for fingerprinting and card issuance.
• This permit, not the visa, is what legally allows you to stay and study in Italy.

Work rights:

• You can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during holidays and breaks.
• Worth checking realistic part-time jobs in Italy before committing to a city, since availability varies a lot between Milan and smaller towns.

After graduation:

• Your permit typically converts into a one-year permit to search for work.
• A useful head start if you're weighing the post-study work options in Italy instead of returning immediately.

1. Confirm the €10,179.85 financial requirement with your consulate directly before finalizing your bank statements, since figures can be updated between now and your application date.
2. Start your HRD attestation and MEA apostille process at least three months before you plan to apply, since this step alone causes the most avoidable delays.
