IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is set by Italy's Ministry of Universities and Research and is mandatory for every applicant, Italian or international, applying to English-taught Medicine and Surgery courses at both public and most private universities.

NEET and IMAT serve different purposes, and neither replaces the other:

• NEET-UG is required by India's National Medical Commission for any Indian student pursuing MBBS anywhere outside India, including Italy. Without a qualifying NEET score, the NMC will not issue the eligibility certificate you need to practice in India later, regardless of where you studied.
