How to Check IELTS Results?

IELTS results for both modes of the test are available online. To check your result, you must visit the official IELTS IDP website and log in with your credentials.

IELTS scores are released as IELTS TRF or Test Report Form and remain valid for two years.

The IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is your official score document, containing individual scores for each section—readinglisteningwriting, and speaking—as well as your overall band score

Universities and employers accept the TRF as proof of English proficiency, and it remains valid for two years from your test date. Candidates typically receive one TRF, except for those applying to IRCC, who are entitled to two copies.

Your TRF includes personal details like your name, date of birth, nationality, and a unique TRF number for verification. Scores range from 0 to 9 across all sections.

There are two ways to access your IELTS results: online and via SMS.

Steps to Receive IELTS Results Online

  • Visit the Official IELTS Website or Portal: Go to the official IELTS website or the specific portal link provided by your test centre.
  • Log In with Your Credentials: Use the login details (usually your ID and password) given to you at the time of registration. These are essential for secure access to your results.
  • Locate the Results Section: Once logged in, navigate to the results section or the link labelled “View Results.”
  • Check and Download Your Results: Your scores will be displayed on the screen. You can view each section score as well as the overall band score. Some portals allow you to download or print a copy of your results for reference.
Note: IELTS on Computer results are available within 2 days, while paper-based test results are usually available 13 days after the test date.

Accessing IELTS Results via SMS

  • Compose a New SMS: Open your messaging app and create a new message.
  • Enter the Required Details: Type your candidate number and other specific information as directed by your test centre. The exact details may vary, so ensure you’ve received these instructions from the centre.
  • Send the SMS to the Designated Number: Send the message to the number provided by your test centre or listed on the official IELTS website.
  • Receive Your Results: You should receive an SMS response with your IELTS scores, typically including your band score for each section and the overall band score.

Icon Tip

Check with your test centre beforehand, as SMS services for IELTS results may vary by region.

Result via SMS is an exclusive service for IELTS IDP test-takers. To avail of this service, you must sign the IDP IELTS SMS agreement form on the day you take your speaking test.

The SMS does not contain your IELTS scorecard or TRF. It is only sent to you for information purposes.

You can find the complete breakdown of your IELTS results by logging into your official IELTS IDP account and viewing your IELTS TRF.

How to Send IELTS Scores to Universities?

IELTS sends five additional copies of your TRF to universities on your behalf, completely free of cost. You can select these universities during registration.

If you have more copies of ATRFs, you must pay an administrative fee of INR 250 per university.

Here’s how you can do that:

  • Visit the official IELTS IDP website and log in to your IDP account
  • Select the “ADD TRF” option
2.

How to calculate IELTS Band Score?

You get awarded a score between 0-9 for every section of IELTS. The average of these scores is considered your overall score.

Your overall score can be whole (e.g., 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half (e.g., 6.5, 7.5, 8.5). If your average is not a whole or half score, it will be rounded to the nearest whole or half score.

Example:

Consider the following IELTS scores.

  • Listening: 7.5
  • Reading: 6.5
  • Writing: 6.0
  • Speaking: 7.0

Average Calculation

Formula:

(sum of scores) / number of scores = average score

(7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0) / 4 = 27 / 4 = 6.75

Since 6.75 is not precise, it will be rounded off to 7.0, which will be your overall IELTS band score.

What do your IELTS band scores mean?

  • Every number between 0-9 carries a value. Based on the score you receive, universities and employers can understand your English proficiency.
  • A score between 0-3 usually means your English language skills need a lot of improvement, and you may need help communicating with the locals.
  • A score between 4-5 shows that you have a basic understanding of English, though you may struggle to communicate your ideas and have fruitful conversations.
Note: Very few universities accept scores between 0-5 for admissions.
  • If your score is between 6 and 7, your English language skills are good enough. It suggests you can easily manage to communicate your thoughts and ideas. This scoring range is ideal for university applications abroad.
  • Anything above 8 is an excellent score, indicating you’re a natural. A score like this can get you into excellent universities, considering you have met the other prerequisites.

IELTS EOR or IELTS Revaluation

If you're not satisfied with your IELTS scores, you can request a re-evaluation through the IELTS Enquiry on Result (EOR) process. This involves a team of senior evaluators who re-mark your test without seeing your original scores, ensuring an unbiased review. Alternatively, if you’re looking to improve in just one area, IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake option, allowing you to focus on a specific skill without retaking the entire test.

The IELTS fee for requesting an IELTS remark or IELTS EOR Fees in India (as of mid-2025)  is below.

  • IELTS on Paper/Computer: ₹13,500
  • IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI): ₹13,650
  • IELTS Life Skills (A1/B1): Approximately ₹12,950

You receive a full refund of the EOR fee if your scores are increased during the remarking process.

The timeframe to submit an EOR request is within six weeks of your test date.

How to request IELTS EOR?

  • Log in to your IELTS IDP account and find the EOR tab
  • Under the tab, click on “Apply now” and fill out the form
  • Select the sections you would like to be remarked on
  • You will receive an invoice in 2 business days
  • You can complete the payment through the link provided in the email
  • You will receive your re-evaluated result in 2-21 business days

FAQs

Q. When is the IELTS result declared?

Ans. In 2025, your IELTS results will be released within 3-5 days for the computer-delivered test and on the 13th day for the paper-based test. You can preview your score on the official test-taker portal. Your physical Test Report Form (TRF) is typically dispatched after this online release.

Q. How many students fail IELTS?

Ans. The IELTS exam has no "pass" or "fail" designation, so no one technically fails. You receive a band score from 1 to 9 reflecting your proficiency. Your success is measured by whether your score meets the entry requirements set by the specific university or immigration body you're applying to.

Q. Is 6.5 a good IELTS result in India?

Ans. Yes, an overall score of 6.5 remains a strong and competent result for Indian students in 2025. It meets the criteria for thousands of university courses worldwide, including in Canada, the UK, and Australia. However, highly competitive programs or top-tier universities may require a 7.0 or above.

Q. Can I retake the IELTS exam?

Ans. Absolutely. You can retake the IELTS test as many times as you wish to achieve your target score; there are no restrictions on the number of attempts. You simply need to register for a new test date and pay the full examination fee for each attempt.

Q. What is the validity of the IELTS result?

Ans. Your IELTS test score is valid for a period of two years from your test date. This two-year validity period is a global standard recognized by all institutions and immigration authorities in 2025. If your result is older, you will need to retake the test for it to be considered valid.

Q. Why can't I see my IELTS results?

Ans. If you cannot view your results online, it's often due to entering incorrect login details (passport number, date of birth). In some cases, results may be slightly delayed for administrative checks. Double-check your information, and if the issue persists, contact your test centre directly.

Q. Is there a negative marking in IELTS?

Ans. No, the IELTS test does not use negative marking. Your score in the Listening and Reading sections is based only on the number of correct answers. This means you should always attempt every question, as there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

Q. Can I go to Canada with a 5 band score?

Ans. In 2025, it is extremely unlikely you can secure a Canadian study or immigration visa with a band score of 5.0. Canadian immigration (IRCC) and universities have stringent language requirements, with most programs, especially under the Student Direct Stream (SDS), requiring a minimum of 6.0 in each band.

Q. How long does it take to get IELTS UKVI result?

Ans. The result timeline for IELTS UKVI is identical to the standard test. For computer-delivered UKVI tests, results are available in 3-5 days. For the paper-based UKVI format, results are consistently released 13 calendar days after your test date.

Q. How can I check my IELTS results online?

Ans. To check your results online, visit the official website of the council you booked with (IDP or British Council). Navigate to the test-taker portal and log in using your personal details, including your passport number and test date. This online view is for your information; the TRF is your official document.

Q. What can I do if I’m unhappy with my test results?

Ans. If you are unsatisfied with your score, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) at your test centre within six weeks of the test date. A senior examiner will re-mark your test. This service requires a fee, which will be fully refunded if your score changes to a higher band.

Q. How much does IELTS TRF cost?

Ans. Your initial test fee includes one personal Test Report Form (TRF) and up to five electronic submissions to institutions. If you need additional TRFs, you can order them for a fee. In 2025, the cost for an additional electronic TRF is typically around ₹300, while a posted copy will cost more.

Q. Does IELTS send TRF by post?

Ans. Yes, you will receive one official hard copy of your Test Report Form (TRF) by post or courier to your registered address. While you receive a physical copy, remember that most universities and immigration bodies in 2025 verify your scores electronically directly with the IELTS verification service.
