Breaking Into Data Science: Degrees, Careers & Entry Requirements Explained

According to a recent study by LinkedIn, careers in data science are witnessing a growth of a whopping 35% annual growth rate in the US alone, and the demand is only set to increase in the future. Harvard Business Review describes Data Science as the sexiest job of the 21st Century. Another report by Grand View Research estimates that the data science industry will see a compound annual growth rate of 26.9% from 2020 to 2027, reaching a revenue value of $25.94 billion. 

The best part is, that entry-level positions account for 55% of job offers, and interestingly, only five tech giants Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook have employed one-half of the total data scientists the world has. What background do you need? 

Truly speaking, data science is a combination of computer science, statistics, and mathematics. That means the program is open to students from any of these backgrounds. But interestingly, many universities now offer this program to students from a wide range of backgrounds. Many will want you to have studied some Math or Statistics element or possess some relevant work experience to get into the Data Sciences domain. Many universities may accept you with some certifications too. So in a nutshell, students from non-IT or Math backgrounds can too study Data Sciences. 

Do certifications help? 

100% yes. Certifications and online courses help if you are from non-IT backgrounds and there are plenty on offer that are paid or free. Universities look at your overall background and if you have documented proof of some courses you’ve done make sure you include them in your application.

Is prior work experience beneficial?

Many universities will accept you without a relevant degree if you have some experience in the field but to maximise your career potential and chances of securing jobs, I will advise getting 2-3 years of work ex before you start your Masters degree.

What are the usual entry requirements?

You will need 55% plus in your bachelor's degree minimum but if you are targeting a higher-ranked university I will suggest 65% plus. English language requirements will vary from country to country but will recommend a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS with 6 in each. Some universities may ask for higher scores and many will accept TOEFL and PTE too. GRE will be required by many universities but there are plenty of options without GRE too. Many universities may give waivers as well. Apart from this, a Statement of Purpose, 2 recommendation letters, CV, Passport, work experience and internship certificates, and any certifications will suffice.

Data Science is one field that has massive demand across all countries, be it the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and so on and so forth. The number of universities offering Data Sciences degrees is also endless. Largely speaking, the choice will depend on your budget, and entry requirements such as academic, English, GRE, and post-study work options. Make sure you shortlist countries as per your needs.
