Here are the best internships you can target with government agencies in India before you apply to a top university abroad.
#1 Ministry of External Affairs Internship
This is open for students with a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university. If you are in your final year you can apply too and you should be a maximum of 25 years in the year of internship. This internship is offered in two terms - April to September and October to March. Each intern is expected to engage for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 3 months. A 10000 rupees per month stipend is paid plus one-time return economy airfare from the state capital to Delhi is offered.
#2 NITI Aayog Internship
This internship is unpaid but it will give you a hands-on experience of the Government of India’s functioning and policies. The eligibility for this internship is one, UG students with 85% in the 12th class and completed the second year of their bachelor's degree. Two, PG students who have completed their first year of Master's or Ph.D. and possess 70% in graduation, and three, students who have completed their UG or PG degree with a minimum of 70%. The minimum period of this internship is 6 weeks and the maximum is 6 months.
#3 The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology or MeitY Digital India Internship Scheme
This internship is open to UG and PG students specifically for Computer Science and Engineering, IT, Electronics and Communications, Electrical Engineering, Law, and Economics. Do note that students in their last semester will not be eligible to apply also you will need at least 60% in your last degree or class 12. 10000 rupees a month is paid for this internship which will last 2 months minimum and 3 months maximum. This internship will make sense for you if you wish to understand the formulation and implementation of government policies in the IT, Electronics, and Internet fields.
#4 National Museum Internship with the Ministry of Culture
Well-suited for students studying undergraduate or postgraduate programs in fields such as Anthropology, History, Art History, Archaeology, Languages, Museology, Library Sciences, Sculpture, and Fine Arts. They are unpaid and require a minimum working commitment of 6 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks. You can opt for Summer Internship which starts in May and Winter which starts in December.
Internships not only make your application stronger but also add experience to your CV and make your SOP stronger. Moreover, many students are also able to secure a letter of recommendation from one of the supervisors from these government agencies which will multiply the chances of getting accepted.
